Breckenridge: Wilkin County, Minnesota
Wilkin County is located in west-central Minnesota in the southern portion of the Red River Valley. The county has historically been known for its high agricultural productivity with major crops of soybeans, sugar beets, wheat, barley, and corn.
The county seat, Breckenridge, is located across the Red River from Wahpeton, North Dakota, and approximately 45 miles south of Fargo, North Dakota/Moorhead, Minnesota, and 197 miles northwest of Minneapolis/St. Paul.
The county was organized on March 6, 1868, and is governed by a five member Board of Commissioners who serve staggered four year terms. The County Auditor, Treasurer, Recorder, Sheriff, and Attorney are also elected to serve similar terms.
Total land area of the county is 472,001 acres (752 square miles) including nine cities, portions of five school districts, 22 full and fractional townships, 313 miles of county-state aid highways and 195 miles of county roads. The county had a 2000 U. S. Census population of 7,138.
