BRECKENRIDGE WASTE WATER TREATMENT PONDS

 

HABITAT: Municipal treatment ponds; fields.

BEST TIMES TO VISIT: April through May; September through October.

BIRDS TO LOOK FOR: Waterfowl; shorebirds; gulls; terns; migrant sparrows.

NOTES FOR BIRDING THE AREA: Viewing from township road permitted. For access inside the ponds area, prior permission is required.

 

Several habitats can be found in the Breckenridge area that offers wonderful birding opportunities. Native tall grass prairie, woodlands, park areas, bogs, large and small lakes and rivers that provide riparian habitat are all found around Breckenridge and the Wilkin County area. Birds such as waterfowl, shorebirds, gulls, terns and migrant sparrows can be found. The best time to visit is April through May and September through October. The Water Treatment Ponds are located just north of Breckenridge along Highway 9. Viewing from the township road is permitted. For access inside the ponds area, prior permission is required. Contact the Public Utility Manager at 218-643-4681.

Other nearby birding areas include Foxhome Prairie, Kettledrummer Prairie, Town Hall Prairie, Anna Gronseth Prairie, Rothsay Wildlife Management Area, Agassiz Waterfowl Production Area, Orwell Wildlife Management Area and Otter Tail Prairie Scientific and Natural Area. Red-tailed Hawks, Greater Prairie chicken, Upland Sandpiper, Marbled Godwit, Eastern Kingbird, Sedge Wren, Savannah, Henslow's LeConte's and Nelson's Sharp-tailed sparrows, Bobolink, American Kestrel, Northern Harrier, Gray Partridge, Snowy and Short-eared Owls, Willow Flycatcher, Lapland and Smith's Longspurs, Yellow Rail, American Bittern, Common Yellowthroat, American Goldfinch, Common Loon, Bohemian Waxwing and the Western Meadowlark can be found in these areas. Rarities include Long-eared and Northern Saw-whet Owls, Townsend's Solitaire, Golden Eagle, Ferruginous Hawk and the Prairie Falcon. The best time to visit is April through October.
