Services & Utilities
Breckenridge is governed by a strong mayor-council type of government. The seven member council meets the first and third Monday of each month. The Breckenridge Police Department consists of four full-time dispatchers, a chief, a sergeant, four patrol persons and one detective. Breckenridge also has an excellent volunteer fire department which is well-trained and equipped. Because the city has its own municipal utilities, it is able to maintain electrical usage rates among the lowest in the state. The Municipal Utilities is governed by a five-member commission.
City Water
Breckenridge has two wells which receive water from the Wahpeton Buried Valley Aquifer. Current daily usage averages 400,000 gallons.
Water Treatment
The city has a sewage lagoon system consisting of four cells covering 110 acres. The sewage treatment plant has a capacity of 500,000 gallons/day. The average demand is 400,000 gallons with a peak demand of 450,000 gallons.
